We recently helped one of the UK’s largest jewellery merchants who have a team of representatives travelling the world with large amounts of valuable gems and jewellery such as rings, earrings and necklaces. They supply most of the UK’s High Street retailers and had expanded, taking on staff who had an unrivalled understanding of their world of retail and jewellery, but were not experienced in import and export procedures.
They asked us for advice when they heard that a competitor had a huge amount of valuable goods seized by Customs because they had failed to follow through all the necessary documentation.
In training with the jewellery merchants, we stressed how it is vital to complete the documentation by seeing the goods being exported, even if temporarily, through the eyes of foreign Customs officers. We spent time with them and devised a special training manual which will help cut down the risk of incorrect paperwork in future.
